But for some, as the daylight hours wane, heavier feelings such as stagnation, fatigue or imbalance arise. Weaving crystals into our winter wellness routine can support us to stay grounded, energized, and emotionally aligned, keeping our vibrations high over the winter period.

Why Use Crystals In Winter?

Crystals hold stable energetic vibrations that can help balance our own energy field. During winter, when sunlight is limited and we spend more time indoors, our energy can feel slow and heavy. Working with crystals can help us keep our ‘vibes high’ during the winter, balancing the chakras — the body’s energy centers — to maintain feelings of wellbeing.

Root (or base) Chakra Crystals: Snowflake obsidian or hematite

Easily recognisable with its small, white, snowflake markings, snowflake obsidian is an excellent ally for grounding your thoughts and clearing away negativity. It encourages a more positive mindset, supporting you to confidently make steps towards any changes you may be planning.

In winter, we often crave a sense of security and grounding. Hematite, with its high iron content and strong connection to the earth, reinforces stability and protection, to help ground us through the darker months.

Winter Tips: Try placing a piece of hematite under your work chair to help ground you. Or, look to nature and collect natural objects like pine cones, bark or stones to place on your windowsill or meditation space – simple tactile reminders of your connection to the earth.

Sacral Chara Crystals: Carnelian or orange calcite

The sacral chakra is associated with creativity and joy, which can wane during winter. Carnelian brings warmth, vitality, passion, and motivation, while orange calcite gently lifts our optimism by supporting emotional balance and positivity.

Winter Tips: Keep these crystals near your workspace to spark inspiration and lift your mood. If you don’t have these crystals, try taking warm baths or sit and watch flowing water to help activate and balance emotional flow. Drink herbal teas with warming spices to nurture creativity and pleasure.

Solar Plexus Chakra Crystals: Citrine

Citrine is a crystal of sunshine, radiating with optimism and abundance — who doesn’t love a winter morning when the sun is out, making the frost sparkle? It reminds us that the spring sun is not far away and that everything moves in a cycle. These breaks and changes in the seasons are there for a purpose; it is our time of rest and inner reflection. Citrine brings warmth, abundance, and confidence into your life.

Winter Tips: Wear citrine jewellery or carry a crystal in your pocket to brighten low-energy days. Placing some citrine around your workspace can help keep your energy high and positive.
If you don’t have any citrine to hand, try getting some morning sunlight on your skin, enjoy eating citrus fruits such as oranges, or drink hot water with a slice of zesty lemon.

Heart Chakra Crystals: Rose quartz or green aventurine

Winter can feel isolating, so heart-centered crystals can be particularly nurturing, promoting compassion, self-love, and emotional warmth. Rose quartz comforts and encourages self-love, while green aventurine attracts peace and harmony, supporting increased wellbeing and new growth.

Winter Tips: Try sleeping with rose quartz under your pillow for emotional support and restful dreams.
Alternatively, try spending time near evergreens which remain green throughout winter — symbols of enduring love — or mindfully breathe in crisp winter air, allowing it to expand your chest and heart space.

Throat Chakra Crystals: Blue lace agate or sodalite

Winter introspection often draws us into deep thought, and both of these crystals can help you communicate your truth gently and clearly. Blue lace agate clears the throat chakra, allowing for clearer communication skills, whilst sodalite empowers you to speak your truth with clarity.

Winter Tips: Meditate with these crystals while journaling or speaking affirmations out loud.
Harness the power of nature by feeling the wind cleanse through your throat and body on winter walks. Speak, sing, or hum outside and notice how your voice carries differently in the cold air — or take time to gaze at open skies to connect with the vastness and clear communication blocks.

Third Eye/Brow Chakra Crystals: Amethyst or labradorite

Amethyst helps us to receive guidance and wisdom and is a good ally for reflection during the winter months. Amethyst can help protect against negative thoughts, promoting a calming, positive mindset. Labradorite enhances intuition and transformation.

Winter Tips: Keep amethyst near your bed to help promote a peaceful night’s sleep, or, if you don’t have these crystals, try stargazing or sitting in moonlight to help awaken your intuition.

Crown Chakra Crystals: Danburite or selenite

With its high vibration, Danburite can help reduce stress levels often heightened during the darker winter months. This powerful crystal can prove a useful ally during meditation to help receive guidance and inner peace. Selenite is another high-vibrational crystal which cleanses and purifies stagnant energy.

Winter Tips: Create a small altar with selenite to cleanse your space and energy during the darker winter months. If you don’t have these crystals handy, try sitting or walking in nature and attune to the calming sounds around you such as rustling leaves underfoot or the gentle patter of falling rain.

Winter need not bring disconnection or despair — it can be a sacred season of reflection and energetic renewal. With mindful crystal practice and gentle chakra care, you can transform the wintertime into a nourishing, soul-deep experience.

Winter Crystal Care Tip!
Crystals can pick up and hold stagnant or heavy energy, and benefit from regular cleaning. Try smudging them with sage smoke or giving your crystals a good clean in water (make sure they are water tolerant though!). Keep a look out for clear skies on a full moon and leave any crystals on a windowsill to charge in the moonlight.

Garnet, Peridot, and the Power of the Horse Chestnut Crystals for grounding, protection, and renewal this autumn

https://www.carolinehardingcrystaltherapist.com/blog/garnet-peridot-and-the-power-of-the-horse-chestnut-crystals-for-grounding-protection-and-renewal-this-autumn

https://www.carolinehardingcrystaltherapist.com/blog/garnet-peridot-and-the-power-of-the-horse-chestnut-crystals-for-grounding-protection-and-renewal-this-autumn#comments

Uncategorized

Most days, I pass a horse chestnut tree on my walk. As autumn arrived, it didn’t disappoint—offering a bountiful crop of shiny brown conkers that drew local children to its base, eagerly searching for the biggest and best prize.

I found myself wondering about the significance of this splendid haul of conkers. The horse chestnut tree has long been seen as a symbol of strength, luck, purification, and protection. Deeply connected to the element of Earth, it features in folklore as a tree that grounds energies and supports healing. Its fruit, the conker, is believed to repel negativity, often used in protective ceremonies or carried as a talisman to keep its wearer safe.

Crystals Inspired by the Horse Chestnut

Inspired by this beautiful tree, my crystal picks for the autumn season have followed its guiding energy.

Garnet — Strength, Stability, and Courage

The first is Garnet. With its rich, red, warming tones, Garnet is known for its protective and revitalising qualities. Associated with the life-giving colour of blood, it strengthens the root chakra, offering stability, resilience, and a deep sense of being grounded—much like the horse chestnut itself.

Garnet is an excellent ally during times of crisis, reinforcing the survival instinct and bringing courage and hope. A variation, Almandine Garnet, is especially useful for anchoring spiritual energies into the physical body, helping you stay balanced through change.

Peridot — Cleansing, Positivity, and Renewal

My second choice is Peridot—a small but mighty crystal with its vibrant olive-green glow. I adore this gem for its protective and cleansing energy. Don’t be fooled by its delicate appearance; Peridot is a powerful force for clearing negativity, anger, stress, and resentment. It sweeps away stagnant energies and replaces them with optimism, clarity, and a little sparkle!

I like to think of Peridot as an attitude adjuster—a gentle but firm reminder that clinging to the past or replaying old stories only weighs us down. It encourages us to release what no longer serves us and look to our higher selves for guidance, helping us move forward with grace and purpose.

A Simple Autumn Practice

So, this autumn, why not seek out a local horse chestnut tree and spend some time in its grounding presence? While stories of Flora are rare in Roman mythology, her Greek counterpart, Chloris, has a beautifully poetic origin. Chloris was a nymph who became the goddess of flowers when Zephyrus, god of the west wind, took her as his bride and gifted her the ability to bring life and growth to the world each spring.

One of the most enchanting legends linking Flora to the divine centers on the foxglove flower. Juno (the Roman equivalent of Greek goddess Hera), the long-suffering wife of Jupiter (Greek god Zeus), was consumed by fury. While her husband’s many lovers bore him countless children, she remained unable to conceive. Seeking divine assistance, Juno turned to Flora.

In a moment steeped in sacred feminine magic, Flora placed a foxglove bloom on Juno’s thumb and gently touched her belly and breasts. Instantly, Juno conceived and later gave birth to Mars on a beach. Because of this myth, foxglove became associated with women’s magic, healing, midwifery, and the white witch’s craft.

Flower Agate: The Bloom Within

A fairly new discovery from Madagascar, Flower Agate is currently only found in this part of the world. Its gentle energy is a reminder of nature’s quiet but persistent will to grow. If you look closely, you’ll see flower-like formations blooming from seed-like centers within the stone—symbolizing personal growth from our innermost potential.

This crystal is nurturing, grounding, and deeply supportive. It restores emotional balance, soothes insomnia, relieves headaches and migraines, and calms stress and anxiety. Flower Agate connects us to the divine feminine, inspires us to dream, and encourages us to blossom into our fullest selves.

Chrysanthemum Stone: Love That Endures

In contrast to the recent discovery of Flower Agate, Chrysanthemum Stone is ancient—formed over 290 million years ago—and found mainly in China and Japan. It’s steeped in stories of eternal love. One such legend tells of two lovers who refused to be separated. Upon their deaths, the man became stone and the woman, a chrysanthemum flower—forever united in spirit.

This stone is a gentle guide for those feeling lost or overwhelmed. It helps us reconnect with our inner truth and life purpose, easing anxiety and inviting peace. With its grounding energy and quiet wisdom, Chrysanthemum Stone reminds us that love—whether for another or for our path—is the most enduring force of all.

<div style="height: 20px; – they really do give us cause to dance with pleasure at the return of warmer weather and the promise of spring.

Daffodils are a symbol of strength and the arrival of success. Spring is a time when we see plants starting to grow in the ground or in greenhouse seed trays, but any green fingered gardener will tell you that for seeds to germinate the growing conditions have to be just right. You would not expect a seed to germinate if you planted it in soil that was lacking in nutrients, or that did not have any water, or had been planted in the shade where no light could reach it would you? In order for your growth, and in order for your seeds to grow – be it a new business venture, exciting travel plans, new hobbies or a new romance, you need to ensure that your growing conditions are right too. This is the time to look at your plans for the rest of the year and nurture yourself accordingly. Perhaps join a gym or fitness class, perhaps clear out that cupboard that you know if full of clutter, perhaps your job is not fulfilling and it’s time to look for a new one, or learn a new skill?

This season’s crystal picks reflect the joy of these possibilities for growth.

Golden Healer Quartz – It simply shines and the darkness goes away.” December marks the time of the winter solstice celebrating the shortest day and the longest night in the northern hemisphere. This is a time of alignment, of going deep into the earth, of reflection and nurturing our inner light, and a time to celebrate the return of the sun and the longer daylight hours.

My first crystal pick for this winter is snow quartz, symbolising our inner solstice light and the light within us that we shine out into the world. Snow quartz helps with spiritual growth and development - if we think about going within during this wintertime and compare it to nature, we know that although things on the surface appear dormant, under the soil growth is still taking place. Think about the snowdrop which heralds the arrival of spring and know that your spiritual growth and development is maturing this winter to give birth to new ideas and opportunities next spring. Snow quartz promotes feelings of peace and joy, it relieves stress and tension and encourages you to reflect and clear the mind.

My second crystal pick is hematite, which anchors our energy to the earth and allows healing energy to flow through. Hematite is a crystal that is commonly used for grounding and has a high iron content. Try holding a piece of hematite and imagine roots growing out of your feet and into the ground, growing all the way down into the center of the earth, and see if you feel more connected and grounded.

My final crystal pick is snowflake obsidian. I love this crystal with its little white snowy flecks (which are caused by volcanic ash) – it always reminds me of winter! Snowflake obsidian has very protective properties and it teaches us to value mistakes as well as success - a helpful guide as we go within this wintertime and contemplate our spiritual growth. Snowflake obsidian also calms and soothes and makes isolation and loneliness empowering.

This yule, enjoy some time wintering yourself with your crystals. Contemplate what you have learnt about yourself over the past year. Choose what you wish to take forward into the year ahead, reignite your inner light and take it with you to shine out into the new year.

I will be holding a crystal circle morning on 18th January 2025 if you need help focusing your intentions for 2025. Email me at welcome@carolinehardingcrystaltherapist.com to book your place.

Season Of Mists And Mellow Fruitfulness.....

https://www.carolinehardingcrystaltherapist.com/blog/season-of-mists-and-mellow-fruitfulness

https://www.carolinehardingcrystaltherapist.com/blog/season-of-mists-and-mellow-fruitfulness#comments

Uncategorized

As we bid summer farewell and embrace John Keats' season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, my crystal picks for the season really embody those rich autumn shades that we see all around us.Smoky quartz with its golden brown colour is known for its purifying and releasing qualities and can help us to release anything that is no longer serving us. The autumn equinox that falls on 21st September marks a point in the year where we have equal hours of light and darkness making it a perfect [...]

As we bid summer farewell and embrace John Keats' season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, my crystal picks for the season really embody those rich autumn shades that we see all around us.

Smoky quartz with its golden brown colour is known for its purifying and releasing qualities and can help us to release anything that is no longer serving us. The autumn equinox that falls on 21st September marks a point in the year where we have equal hours of light and darkness making it a perfect time for us to look at our own lives to see where we need to come into balance too, perhaps releasing any outdated habits or ways of thinking. Smoky quartz has a calming and stabilizing energy which helps to support us in bringing these changes about.

The beautiful golden strength of pyrite brings empowerment and confidence as well as wealth and abundance. If you need strength to bring your life into balance this equinox then pyrite is the perfect companion to help you achieve this. Pyrite works particularly well on the solar plexus chakra so holding a piece of pyrite at this point or imagining you have a pyrite shield protecting you is a great way to bring more strength into your life.

Looking ahead to the festival of Samhain on 31st October my next crystal pick is amethyst. This beautiful crystal brings protection, spirituality, guidance and wisdom. Samhain marks the end of the Celtic year and it is a time to be aware of the wisdom and guidance we have had over the past year. Samhain is a time where the veil between us and our ancestors is at its thinnest and we become aware of those who have gone before us. The 31st October commonly known as Halloween, takes its name from All Hallows Eve where we can feel the energies of our ancestors and ask them for their wisdom. Meditating with amethyst over an issue you are struggling to find an answer for may bring you the answers you need.

My final crystal pick for autumn is black obsidian. Like amethyst, this crystal offers us protection but it also teaches us to value mistakes as well as success. Making mistakes is natural, but how we view these mistakes can be valuable. Next time something doesn't go according to plan, rather than feel despondent, annoyed or upset, trying looking for the thread of learning that has come out of it and reflect with black obsidian on the positive aspect of that insight.
